Tallgrass Artist Residency

tallgrass prairie
The Tallgrass Artist residency is a partnership between the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission, the Center for Living Education at Matfield Green, and the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art at Kansas State University.

The Tallgrass Artist Residency will invite 8-10 artists to participate in two-week residency periods between April 17 and September 22, 2017, as well as a group exhibition and artist talks on September 23, 2017. The residency program is headquartered at The Bank Art Space in the small community of Matfield Green, KS. Our regional partners include the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, The Volland Store, Prairieside Cottage & Outpost, and Matfield Station.

This residency seeks to create connection and conversation across the Great Plains by requesting that applicants currently live in a place that is ecologically considered prairie (though it may be paved and urbanized!). Ideal applicants will have a strong body of work with a voice that reflects the artist’s own community; a dedication to place, and an interest in participating in a contemporary dialogue. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and career levels, media and practice.

Applications are due by March 1, with notification by mid-March.

Artists will be selected based on review of applications by a jury:
-Peter Jasso (Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission)
-Patty Reece (The Volland Store)
-Katherine Hamm (The Bank Art Space)
-Aileen Wang (Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art)
-Laura Berman (Kansas City Art Institute)

  • Residency periods must occur in ten night blocks between April 17 and September 22, 2017
  • Artists will stay at one of three lodging sites: Matfield Station, The Volland Store or Matfield Outpost
  • During the residency period, each artist will give a public presentation of their choosing at a location proximal to their lodging site. (Details TBD on a case-by-case basis)
  • Artists will be required to participate in a group exhibition September 22- November, 2017 at the Bank Art Space in Matfield Green, KS.
  • Artists will be encouraged to participate in the Tallgrass Symposium at the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art on September 23, 2017. (View artist talks from 2016, online) This Symposium is held in conjunction with the opening of the group exhibition at the Bank Art Space.

  • Artists will be provided ten nights of free lodging at one of our three partner sites. (Please click on the links above to learn more about each location and its amenities)
  • Artists may be granted special access at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve
  • Each artist will receive a stipend of $300-400 for travel and material reimbursement.
  • Artists will be invited to stay, as a group, for two nights in Matfield Green during closing events, September 22-23, 2017.
