Topeka’s Washburn Tech to host job and training expo on July 14

To help connect job seekers with employers, an Advanced Systems Technology Job and Training Expo will be held from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. July 14 at the Washburn Institute of Technology Conference Center in Topeka. The expo has been developed through a partnership between the Kansas Department of Commerce, Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce/Go Topeka, the Topeka-area business community and Washburn Tech.

Positions in the high demand advanced systems technology field pay an average of $20 per hour in Topeka and northeast Kansas. The Kansas Department of Labor projects there will be more than 550 advanced systems technology job openings in this region through 2016.

“Advanced systems Technology is a rapidly growing skill in demand by advanced manufacturing such as we have in Topeka, said Steve Jenkins, senior vice president of economic development for GO Topeka Economic Partnership. “The demand for these well-paying jobs is expected to show strong growth in Topeka and the advanced system technology program at Washburn Tech will prepare people to fill these critical jobs.”

Job seekers at the expo will be able to visit with Topeka and northeast Kansas employers which have advanced systems technology job openings and will also be able to learn more about advanced systems technology careers. Job seekers who need additional training will be able to meet with an advisor, explore educational opportunities through the advanced systems technology program at Washburn Tech, and learn about financial aid available to those who qualify.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for job seekers to reach out to employers, learn about their needs and make the connections that are critically important to finding employment in today’s economy,” said Kansas Commerce Secretary Pat George. “This also is an opportunity for job seekers to get information on additional skills training. I encourage them to take advantage of the services offered.”
