Governor Brownback, Kansas Regents to announce funding for engineering grants

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback, Commerce Secretary Pat George and the Kansas Board of Regents have scheduled a brief news conference on Wednesday, Dec. 14, to announce the initial funding for the Keeping Kansas Competitive engineering expansion, which was passed by the Kansas Legislature this past spring.

The program will provide $1million in Fiscal Year 2012 for engineering expansion grants to Kansas State University, the University of Kansas and Wichita State University to address the need for more engineers by business and industry in the state. Future years will provide $3.5 million per year in grant funding by the state, with a dollar-for-dollar match provided by the universities.

WHEN: 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 14.

WHERE: Kansas Board of Regents, Suite 520, Curtis State Office Building, 1000 SW Jackson, Topeka, Kan. 66612.

WHO: Gov. Sam Brownback, Commerce Secretary Pat George, Kansas Board of Regents members and Dr. Andy Tompkins, President and CEO, Kansas Board of Regents.

Also in attendance will be K-State President Kirk Schulz, KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little and WSU President Donald Beggs, along with representatives from each university’s engineering schools and members of the Kansas Legislature.

MEDIA AVAILBILITY: Following the news conference, George and college representatives will be available to briefly answer additional media questions in the Kathy Rupp Conference Room.
