Associated Wholesale Grocers relocates headquarters to KCK

Associated Wholesale Grocers (AWG) will construct a new office complex in Kansas City, Kan., as part of its plan for major expansion.

The 35,000-square-foot facility will be the new home for AWG’s corporate headquarters and 92 employees that will relocate to 5000 Kansas Ave., which is the current location of their distribution center. AWG is the second largest privately held company in the Kansas City region and has been recognized for its continued growth. The company was recently named by Ingram’s magazine among the top 100 fastest growing companies in the metro area for the fourth consecutive year – adding new grocery stores and a distribution center in Fort Worth, Texas.

“AWG has been part of our community for 40 years and we’re excited about the announcement of this expansion and additional investment in Kansas City, Kansas,” said George Brajkovic, property manager for the Unified Government (UG) of Wyandotte County.

The new project is projected to produce an additional $700,000 a year in property tax revenue during the 10-year abatement period. AWG currently employs more than 1,000 workers. The new development project qualifies under the UG’s tax abatement policy and a 10-year PILOT schedule. The UG will issue approximately $6.5millon in industrial revenue bonds for the project, which will abide by prevailing wage and local, minority and women owned business requirements.

The Kansas Department of Commerce assisted the UG during the early stages of the project.

“I want to congratulate AWG on its expansion and job growth in Wyandotte County,” said Kansas Commerce Secretary Pat George. “I look forward to this new chapter in the company’s history, and I appreciate its commitment to Wyandotte County and Kansas.”

Brajkovic provided a brief presentation during a public hearing held Dec. 15 during the regularly scheduled Board of Commission meeting. AWG plans to begin construction of the new headquarters immediately.
