Hispanic and Latino American Affairs Commission to host job fair on Sept. 15

The Kansas Hispanic and Latino American Affairs Commission (KHLAAC) will host a job fair from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo. The job fair also is sponsored by the Kansas departments of Labor and Commerce, as well as the Missouri Full Employment Council.

The job fair will take place in conjunction with the Expo Americas event that celebrates the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, which lasts from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer will kick off Hispanic Heritage Month on Sept. 15 by presenting a Hispanic heritage proclamation signed by Gov. Sam Brownback to the KHLAAC.

The KHLAAC has partnered with Expo Americas and the job fair exhibitors to offer employment opportunities alongside other event activities.

The Area III Workforce Partnership Mobile Workforce Center will be at the job fair, and Workforce Partnership employees will be on hand to assist attendees with resume building and to set up KANSASWORKS accounts for job searches.

The Department of Labor has also launched a new online jobs resource for veterans: Skills, Education and Resources for Veteran Employment, KanSERVE. Veterans attending the event will get hands on experience in using KanSERVE to locate available jobs and training specific to their skill set, using only their Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) code.

The Missouri Employment Council will recruit and refer applicants at the job fair and offer job skills assessments. They will also be providing background screening while at the event.

“We are ready to serve our veterans in a small way after they have served each of us in the military. We want to simplify their job search as they transition to civilian life,” Labor Secretary Karin Brownlee said. “We encourage young people exploring their future options as well as current job seekers to join us at Expo Americas on September 15 and 16.”
