Kansas Rural Opportunities Conference set for Nov. 7-8

The Rural Opportunities Conference, sponsored by the Kansas Department of Commerce, is set for Nov. 7-8 in Junction City. This year’s conference will offer participants the opportunity to learn about the latest in broadband development, as well as discuss housing needs, community financed services and growing a business through exporting. More than 200 economic development representatives, entrepreneurs, telecommunications professionals and community leaders are expected to participate.

The conference will feature general and breakout sessions focused on fostering an entrepreneurial culture; building community support for local business expansion; an overview on statewide broadband data collection and mapping; community land trusts; and enabling eCommerce for rural and home-based businesses, among other topics.

WHAT: Rural Opportunities Conference, sponsored by the Kansas Department of Commerce; the Kansas Telecommunications Industry Association; the State Independent Telephone Association of Kansas; Rocking M Radio Inc. of Manhattan; the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development; KsFiberNet; RedTire at the University of Kansas; NetWork Kansas; the Mid-America Manufacturing Technology Center (MAMTC); Kansas Small Business Development Center; U.S. Small Business Administration; AT&T Kansas in Topeka and Cox Business in Wichita.

WHO: State leaders, including Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback and Commerce Secretary Pat George. Other speakers include Steve Radley, president and CEO, of NetWork Kansas; Michael Brown, partner in national consulting group Burlington Associates; and Charles Fluharty, president and CEO of the Rural Policy Research Institute. WHEN/WHERE: 10 a.m.-5:15 p.m., Nov. 7, and 8 a.m.-2:45 p.m., Nov. 8. The first day of the conference also will feature a tradeshow reception starting at 5:15 p.m.
